FFI Fly Casting Instructor Certified Seminar

Prepare fly casting anglers to become Fly Fishers International (FFI) casting instructors (CI).
A review of all aspects of the casting and teaching requirements will be provided for taking the exam.

  • Your Instructors

    Eric Cook, Mack Martin and Tom Rueping are FFI Master certified instructors as well as CICP FFI validated examiners. We have cumulatively over 100 years of experience with casting instruction and 50+ years as CICP examiners. (Additional resumes are shown on AFFS website)
    It takes a certain level of knowledge and skill to be a good fly caster. A much higher level of skill and knowledge is required to be a good fly-casting instructor. We at the AFFS are here to help you reach that higher level by offering the Certified Casting Instructor Training Seminar. You will enjoy this journey and will learn to be a better fly angler and competent instructor.

  • How to Prepare for Seminar

    The most important pre-requisite for attending this seminar is to read over the requirements for becoming an FFI certified casting instructor (CI). Every candidate should download and review the CI Study Guide and Tips for the Performance & Teaching Tasks 1-22. It is also recommended that students practice any casts that they find challenging. Copies of these requirements and clipboards will also be provided for note taking during this seminar.

    • How to select rod, reel, line and leaders
    • Five essentials of fly casting
    • Casting mechanics
    • Roll casts on grass and in water
    • Typical questions on written test
    • Casting faults and corrective actions
    • Overview of teaching tasks on the exam
    • What to expect on exam day
    • Etiquette of candidates and examiners during test
    • Tips to help you pass the exam.

  • What You Need to Bring to Class

    1. 9 foot 7 weight rod (maximum weight)
    2. Maximum 7 weight fly line of your choice
    3. 7.5 foot leader with yarn fly
    4. Sunglasses and hat

  • Location of School

    All classes will be conducted at the Atlanta Fly Fishing School (AFFS) located on private property in Cumming, Georgia. Accommodation includes an air-conditioned classroom, complete audio/visual equipment, Wi-Fi and two-acre lake.

    $1000 with minimum enrollment of 4 students

    Maximum enrollment 8 students

    $500 deposit required when booking seminar

    March 16 &17, 2024 (Saturday & Sunday)
    September 21 & 22, 2024 (Saturday and Sunday)

  • Lodging and Dining Accommodations

    Holiday Inn Express, Hampton Inn and Country Inn are all located at Hwy 20 and Hwy 400 approximately 8 miles away (15 minute ride).There are numerous restaurants nearby in Cumming and Alpharetta.
    Lunch, snacks and drinks will be provided each day.
